What it's like Learning to Drive During a Pandemic

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

Learning to drive can be difficult and daunting, but to learn during a pandemic can make it even harder. If you're considering starting driving lessons or getting back into driving after taking a break during lockdown, this post is for you! If you're feeling nervous about driving, I wrote a post earlier this year about overcoming driving anxiety which may be helpful for you.

I first started to learn how to drive back in late December/early January, yet because of Covid19, my lessons have been delayed until now. Fortunately, because I'm a key worker I can apply for my practical driving test at any time (I'm just taking a few refresher lessons before I do!) so I'm eager to continue and hopefully pass my test soon.

Here in the UK, you can apply to start driving lessons at any time. However, you can't apply for your theory or practical driving exams unless you're a key worker. This is because there's a lot of people waiting after having their test cancelled during lockdown, so they're prioritised first.

Driving instructors now have to ask if you've been in contact with anyone with Coronavirus or if you have any symptoms yourself prior to every lesson. They also have to ensure that the car is disinfected before and after every use. The same rules apply for the practical driving exam too. Masks also have to be worn during lessons, and if you have to wear glasses while driving then honestly, this can be such a pain!

Mask + Glasses = Steaming Up

Obviously, you don't want to take your hands off the steering wheel to adjust your mask or glasses, so if you need to wear glasses for driving, make sure that they're secure before you've set off and won't need to be adjusted mid-drive.

Obviously social distancing isn't possible within such a small space, so it can be a little nerve-wracking. It's your decision whether or not to begin/continue with driving lessons under the current circumstances. If you feel safe with your driving instructor (I know mine is incredibly thorough with his cleaning routine!) then you should be okay.

Are you hoping to get back into driving lessons soon? Let me know in the comments below.

Take care and stay safe,

Sophie x
