Morning Routine Ideas For Adults | Morning Habits For Productivity and Success

Updated: Sep 21, 2020

Do you hit snooze on your alarm multiple times before you get up? We've all been there!

But with a bit of pre-planning and organising, starting your day with the perfect morning routine can make all the difference. A good morning routine can ensure that you feel refreshed and motivated for the day ahead, increasing productivity and mental wellbeing.

Why do you need a morning routine?

A morning routine can really set the tone for the rest of the day. There's a sense of accomplishment when you've completed a task or two earlier than planned. I'm a huge fan of organising and planning, and staying on top of your workload can help to decrease stress and anxiety.

I get it. I'm very open about my depression, and as a result, my illness does often lead me to sleeping in on many occasions. Yet, on the days when my mental illness allows, it feels amazing knowing just how many tasks I've completed when usually I'd still be tucked up in bed!

If you're like me, don't panic! These are simple everyday tips to help you get started with your day.

Create the Perfect Morning Routine

Wake Up at the Same Time Every Day

Waking up at the same time every morning will help to adjust your body clock so it quickly becomes natural for you to feel awake at your chosen time. Of course I'm not telling you jump out of bed at 4am, just whatever feels right for you. Perhaps get up an hour or two earlier than normal? Make sure you've had plenty of sleep overnight though, eight hours is the recommended amount or you may feel tired and grumpy if you lack the sleep you need.

Take Part in Some Morning Exercise

Sometimes I eat before exercising, and sometimes I don't. Depends how peckish I am, I suppose! I discovered a new passion for yoga during lockdown and try to incorporate it in my morning routine whenever possible. A quick ten minute yoga routine can make you feel energised and motivated for the day ahead. If you don't do anything else today, at least you've had a quick workout!

Have a Hot (or Cold) Shower

Showering early in the morning is a quick way to feel refreshed and it immediately wakes you up. I like to mix things up now and again and try a quick burst of cold water to really wake me up (and then quickly turn it back to hot again, because why?!).

Have a Healthy Breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast can be a nutritious start to the day, providing you with plenty of energy to face that to-do list! Whether it's a bowl of porridge filled with berries, or a fruity yoghurt, a good breakfast can go a long way! Make sure you drink plenty of water too.

Self-Care

Spend some time getting dressed, brushing your teeth and applying your skincare. It can feel great to make the effort to get dressed up and wear nice clothes, even if you're staying in for the day!

Write Your To-Do List

This is always my favourite part of the morning! I like to write a to-do list and then colour code it into sections of 'Must Do', 'Should Do' and 'Could Do', more on this here. Whether you use a bullet journal and make it all colourful, or just jot down on the notes app, having a structured to-do list can really help to organise your day.

That's my morning routine, but I like to mix it up now and again too! There's plenty of morning habits that you could experiment with and implement into your routine, such as:

Quick Morning Habits

- Write down 5 things you're grateful for today

- Listen to a podcast

- Read 50 pages of a book

- Meditate

- Drink Water

- Have a quick 10 minute burst of tidying the house

- Go for a walk

- Speak to a friend or loved one

- Journal

- Complete a puzzle

- Smile :)

Such a good read! I agree with making sure you have breakfast in the morning. To me this is the most important thing!

These are all great ideas! I like to just sit in the quiet of the house after I brush my teeth, and check any messages from the day before. I also refine the to-do list I made the night before!
