Hello all! Another later than usual post today, blogging around full-time work is a very difficult task! :D Today, I'll be focusing on 'Older Adults and Body Image', feel free to comment below!
I think many of us experience some fear or apprehension associated with getting older - I know I certainly do! Whether it’s the uncertainty of our physical and mental abilities, illness or the existential crisis looming over us (don’t think, don’t think!), for many of us, these fears cross our minds.
For those of you who don’t know, I have a full-time job working in healthcare. And within this, I meet a lot of elderly people and I admit sometimes I do find myself comparing myself to them and wondering if I’ll age in similar ways. Yet it’s inevitable that our bodies will alter with age. For some people, that’s through developing wrinkles, a decrease in height, a loss of muscle, etc. although this is more noticeable or severe for some. I’ve met people who look many years below their true age and their minds younger still (!); we can’t judge people based on their bodies.
Some people turn to cosmetic surgery and injections to iron out wrinkles or to appear younger, only we shouldn’t feel this way. Often, when thinking of the impact of body image, our first thought may turn to younger people – and often we forget the potential negative impacts of body image ideals on older adults. Getting older is inevitable, it’s part of being human and alive – and although I for one fear this process, we shouldn’t. It should be embraced as part of life’s beauty.
How we perceive ourselves and our bodies throughout life is a complex topic; yet one which should be discussed often and openly. What are your thoughts?
Take care, Sophie x
