Body Image and Gender

Updated: Jul 12, 2020

Good evening!

For today's post to celebrate #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek , I'll be discussing body image in relation to gender.

Whatever your gender, you may feel pressured to conform to an ‘ideal’ body image. For those that identify as women, neither or other, this could possibly involve perfect skin and a slim figure. Sometimes we feel the need to portray ourselves this way on social media, through using editing skills to hide acne or blemishes to achieve these supposed ‘ideals’, yet this thought-process could lead to mental illnesses such as eating disorders, which demonstrates why this week is so important to raise awareness of body image and the possible negative consequences as a result of these so-called ‘ideals’.

Those who identify as men, neither or other can also feel the same pressures, possibly involving the ideal of being muscular and strong. Yet this doesn’t make you any less of a person if you don’t ‘conform’ to this idea. We are all unique, with our own personal goals and accomplishments. We shouldn’t feel the need to all fit into the same box; all conforming as one. We should feel free to embrace our personality, not to care how we’re perceived by others, and focus on how we feel ourselves. To be comfortable with who we are, in our own skin.

Take care, Sophie x
