Happy Monday everyone!
As it's LGBTQ+ Month, I've decided that it's time to talk about my identity for the first time.
I identify as asexual, meaning to feel little or no sexual attraction to others. There is a spectrum, yet for me personally, I don't feel any romantic or sexual attraction towards others - I have no desire to love, be in a relationship or be 'close' to anyone in such a way. Asexuality is sometimes referred to using the shortened term 'Ace'.
I didn't notice that I was 'different' to other people until quite late into my teens. When I first started high school, I noticed that many people were interested in having a girlfriend or boyfriend - and experiencing their first kiss. This never interested me, as I much preferred to focus on my school work or reading in the library (Yes, I was THAT kid!). I simply put it down to being too young to want a relationship and didn't think any more of it.
Later in high school, when I was aged around 14/15, many of my friends had had multiple relationships and the questions were asked of why I hadn't found anyone yet. My go-to excuse was that I didn't want to waste my time with teenage boys (as I knew I wasn't attracted to any of them!) and people assumed I was waiting for 'the one'. However, I knew that this wasn't the case - I never felt any desire to have a relationship, I knew that 'the one' wouldn't come.
I'm now in my early 20s, and I STILL haven't felt any form of attraction to anyone - romantic or otherwise. It's simply not something that I'm interested in, and while it would be nice to live with someone rather than be alone, I wouldn't want them to be seen as a romantic or sexual partner - and for them to only ever be considered a friend.
Personally, for the moment, I identify as an aromatic asexual. If you have any questions, or wish to find out more about asexuality, feel free to comment below. However, I can only answer from personal experience as it differs for everyone.
Take care and stay safe,
Sophie x
