Happy Friday everyone! Today's book review is of Louise Candlish's book 'The Other Passenger'.
I've recently finished 'The Other Passenger' by Louise Candlish! Candlish's latest book, published in late June, is a psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns.
James (Jamie) Buckby, late 40s, and his wife Clare meet young couple Kit and Melia. Intrigued by their youthful attitude to life, they soon make good friends. Yet Kit is reported missing soon after Christmas, and as Jamie was the last person to see him, he's named as the No.1 suspect...
This book took me through ALL of the emotions. Like whattt?!
In all honestly, I was considering DNF-ing it (Did not finish) as the plot felt to be moving incredibly slowly until the second half when BAM does it pick up! It wasn't until the second half of the book that the "investigation" took place - I mean, part of the reason we read a thriller/mystery is to be involved in the action and guess the plot, yet the first half was an introduction to the characters. However, once it gets going, it's an absolute joy to read!
The storyline and characters were well written, each with a different personality and approach to the Kit's disappearance. I disliked the main character, despite knowingly doing wrong through his affair with Melia, he still expected to be liked and welcome within his partner's home and his general approach to life was irritating. I also disliked Kit as he does say some quite harmful things about suicide.
The plot was incredibly clever and so creatively thought-out that for lovers of a good psychological thriller / mystery, this book is 100% for you! There's not too much I can mention about it without ruining the ENTIRE book for you! There's plenty of twists and surprises that keep you guessing, right to the very end.
It started badly, then picked up - yet because of the slow start and unlikeable characters, I'd give this book a rating of 3 1/2 stars. I was originally going to give it two stars yet because of the incredible plot developments, I decided to rate it higher.
I wish I could tell you more about this book! But by the very nature of it, I can't! It's important to mention a few trigger warnings within this book, including claustrophobia/panic attack on public transport, drug and alcohol abuse and harmful comments on suicide and self-harm.
