Review

'The Love Square' by Laura Jane Williams is a romantic feel-good book.

Penny Bridge has been unlucky in love, with her ex leaving her soon after her cancer diagnosis. Hoping to move on, she's looking for a future partner to spend her life with - yet soon finds she's met with three! She's faced with a difficult choice - the chef, the wine merchant or the one that can't commit?

I enjoyed this book because there were some added twists that you wouldn't necessarily expect from this type of book. Judging by the cover and the synopsis, I thought this book would be more of a romantic comedy / chick lit read, however it's definitely more emotionally-driven than I first expected. Penny has a developed backstory, as her experiences with cancer and infertility adds another layer to the story.

The characters were wonderfully diverse, which is something I particularly liked. There's plenty of LGBTQ+ representation, and it was never mentioned as an integral part of the story - just 'there' as it should be. Homosexual relationships and a non-binary character, yes please!

However, I did find the pacing a little difficult at times. I feel that sometimes it skipped what could have been interesting emotional moments between characters. Also, I definitely preferred the beginning of the book over the end, Francesco and Penny's friendship/romance was funny and enjoyable to read at first - yet near the end of the book, I feel that Penny's flirting started to become more repetitive and I did begin to lose interest.

Overall, I'd give this book 3.5 stars, as it's a good romantic book with some emotional depth in there too. I admired how Williams touched upon many difficult topics with such sensitivity, including cancer and infertility. As a trigger warning, there is mention of cancer, infertility (IVF and surrogacy) and there's also strong language.

If you're looking for a romantic holiday read, with some emotional depth, then this one could be perfect for you!
